Presence & Power #1 | March 19, 2023 9a
Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor
PRESENCE:
“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” John 16:7 (NIV)
POWER:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (NIV)
Discernment Triangle
“Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
2 Peter 1:20-21 (NIV)
“On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.” John 7:37-39 (NIV)
Reflection Questions:
1) What was one thing that stuck out to you from the sermon?
2) What does it mean that the Holy Spirit is a person? (not an “it” or an impersonal force) How does this affect how we relate to Him?
3) Why do you think the Holy Spirit can be misunderstood, ignored, or forgotten? What can make experiencing the Holy Spirit confusing? How have you seen this in your life or the life of others?
4) What questions do you have about the Holy Spirit and his role in your life?
5) How have you experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life? Share an example. How have you experienced the power of the Holy Spirit in your life? Share an example.
6) Why do you think Jesus would say it is better for him to leave so he can send the Holy Spirit to be with followers of Jesus? What makes it better? How does the Holy Spirit help us live out our faith and become All In followers of Jesus?
7) What practical things can we do throughout the day to experience more of the Presence and Power of the Holy Spirit?
8) Discernment Triangle: Word - Holy Spirit - Community. Why must we have all three to discern the voice of God in our life?
9) What step do you need to take today to experience more of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit? Who can you share this with?
Read John 14-16, Romans 8
10) What do I learn about the Holy Spirit?
11) What does He want to do in my life?
12) What questions do I have?
13) Where do I need to grow in my experience of the Holy Spirit?
