Making Room #1 | Generosity | December 4, 2022
Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor
“Jesus warns people far more often about greed than about sex, yet almost no one thinks they are guilty of it. Therefore we should all begin with a working hypothesis that ‘this could easily be a problem for me.’ If greed hides itself so deeply, no one should be confident that it is not a problem for them.” Tim Keller (Counterfeit Gods)
1) CHEERFUL
“God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7b (NIV)
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21 (NIV)
2) PROPORTIONAL
“Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.” 2 Corinthians 8:11-12 (NIV)
3) INTENTIONAL
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 (NIV)
4) SACRIFICIAL
“In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people.” 2 Corinthians 8:2-4 (NIV)
5) CONTINUAL
“But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.”
2 Corinthians 8:7 (NIV)
1) Read 2 Corinthians 8 and 9 (3 times).
2) Make a PLAN
Reflection Questions:
Read 2 Corinthians 8 and 9
1) What was one thing from the sermon that grabbed your attention? What did you take away?
2) On a scale of 1 to 10, how greedy are you? Why did you choose your number?
3) Why do you think greed can be so subtle? Why is it difficult to see greed in ourselves?
4) How have you observed Jesus grow your generosity? What things did He use to shape you?
5) What barriers do you face in becoming a more generous person?
6) “Generosity is not sacrificial if it doesn’t change the way we live.” Agree or Disagree? Why?
7) Why is important to have a plan and be intentional if we are going to become generous?
8) What is your next step in growing in your generosity?
