WHISPER #4 | Pain | May 22, 2022
Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor
1) I am with you in your pain…
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all... Psalm 34:18-19 (NIV)
C.S. Lewis – The Problem of Pain
We can ignore even pleasure. But pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.
2) I understand your pain…
During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered… Hebrews 5:7-8 (NIV)
3) I will redeem your pain…
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NIV)
C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity
Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.
4) Praise me in your pain…
At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.
Job 1:20-22 (NIV)
Listen to my words, Lord; consider my sighing. Psalm 5:1 (NIV)
Reflection Questions:
1) What have been some of the most challenging seasons of pain in your life?
2) How have seasons of pain and darkness impacted your relationship with God? Positively and/or Negatively?
3) Were you able to hear God’s whispers in those seasons? Explain.
4) How has God used pain to speak to you and shape your life?
5) What are some lies that we believe in the midst of our pain that can make the pain even more challenging? What truths from God do we need lean on in the midst of our pain?
6) How does knowing that Jesus lived a life of pain and suffering change the way we view our own suffering?
7) Read 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 and the C.S. Lewis quote…
C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity
Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.
Do you agree or disagree with Lewis’ observation? Explain
8) What are some tangible ways we can focus on Jesus and eternity and not just our circumstances in the midst of pain?
