Rediscovering Joy #4 | January 29, 2023
Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.“ Philippians 2:12-18 (NIV) (Sanctification)
“Discipleship is the process of becoming who Jesus would be if He were you.” Dallas Willard
1) Process of Growth
2) Picture of Growth
3) Product of Growth
Salvation – past, present, future
Justification : past
We are saved immediately from the penalty of sin.
Sanctification : present
We are saved progressively from the power and practice of sin.
Glorification : future
We are saved ultimately from the presence of sin.
Growth = Yielded x Time
“And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.”
1 Corinthians 10:10 (NIV)
Reflection Questions:
1) Was there something that you sensed God was saying to you from this message? What do you think you need to do about that?
2) How have you experienced God growing and changing you recently? Has that produced JOY in your life? Explain.
3) What do you think is an area of your life that God wants to bring growth today? What would be a step of obedience you could take to see Him do that in you?
4) “God must work in us before He can work through us.” What does that statement mean
to you?
5) What is the difference between the biblical command to work OUT your salvation and the misguided attempt to work FOR your salvation?
6) Salvation includes the biblical terms justification, sanctification, and glorification. How would you define each of those?
7) What does it mean to work out our salvation with fear and trembling? How can you live out “the joy of your salvation” (Psalm 51:12) if you are expected to work out your salvation “with fear and trembling”? (Philippians 2:12)
8) How does living with an awareness of the holy presence of God compel you to live a
life of holiness?
9) Why do you think Paul stresses the importance of doing everything without grumbling or arguing? How does grumbling and arguing rob us and others of joy? How have you
experienced this?
10) How does grumbling and complaining damage your witness to the watching world? We are all tempted to complain and grumble. How can you maintain a joyful attitude in the face of the problems. of life?
11) How should we handle a person in our life or church that is grumbling and complaining?
