Five ‘Goods’ That Overcome Our Weakness
. . .overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21B (NIV)
1) Join Up
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Matthew 4:18-20 (NIV)
2) Show Up
When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon, son of John, do you truly love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:15-17 (NIV)
3) Step Up
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd. . . Acts 2:14A (NIV)
4) Grow Up
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:5-8 (NIV)
5) Give Up
“I will tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted: but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me.” John 21:18-19 (NIV)
Reflection Questions:
1) What weakness have you allowed Satan to use to make you feel disqualified? Is there a different way to look at this area of your life?
2) If others watched your life, what would they say you are committed to?
3) Have you been able to show others how God used a weakness in your life to bring glory to God?
4) Is there an area/arena/challenge you have known for some time you should ‘show up’ for? What is it? What is a first step?
