Referenced Scripture:
John 6:60-69, Mark 10:17-22, Ephesians 4:1-3, Matthew 7:21-23

Reflection Questions:
1. Describe your current relationship with Jesus. DTR (Define The Relationship)What adjectives would you use to describe your connection to Him right now? Is it growing closer, getting more distant, or staying the same? Explain.

2. What is the difference between being a fan of Jesus and being a follower of Jesus? What characteristics would you use to describe each of these kinds of people? Where do you see yourself currently?

3. In the life of Jesus (gospels), how does Jesus describe what it means to be a follower of Him? How does Jesus make this definition clear in his teachings and invitations to follow him?

4. Read Mark 10:17-31 (Rich Young Ruler)What are some observations you can make about following Jesus from this story? How does Jesus separate fans from followers in this story? Can you relate to the response of the rich young ruler? Why or why not?

5. In the sermon we talked about identity based spiritual transformation.
Identity → Process → Outcome (fruit)
(who we are) → (what we do) → (what we get)
Why is it critical to start with identity as we approach the pursuit of spiritual transformation? What is the cost/problem with focusing on outcomes first rather than focusing on our identity? How would your life be different if your core identity was being a follower of Jesus? How would it shape your habits/disciplines and the outcomes of your life?

6. Read Matthew 7:21-23How is it possible for someone to think they are a follower of Jesus and not actually have a relationship with Him?What thoughts or questions come to your mind when you read this passage? Why does this passage make it so important for us to really answer the question, “Am I a follower of Jesus?” (as Jesus defines follower)How does Jesus define a true follower of Him?

7. If you had a DTR (define the relationship) with Jesus what do you think you would say? What do you think He would say?

[00:00:00] When I was in college and in the dating scene, there was an acronym that people used and it was this dtr. [00:00:11] And I still hear that used out there. Do you know what that stands for? Anyone? Show of hands, Couple people. It stands for Define the relationship. [00:00:21] This is that like official talk that you have as you're heading toward maybe potentially a. A romantic relationship where you actually turn your cards face up and you say, this is my level of commitment. This is where things stand. Cause you need to know, is this thing real? [00:00:41] Now I will tell you. When I was in college, I came to Faith in Christ. And after that I was so focused, I said, I am not gonna have a dtr. I am gonna be focused on Jesus. I used to quote 2nd Timothy 2 where Paul says, a soldier, he doesn't get involved in civilian affairs. [00:01:01] That was me back then. [00:01:04] We actually had a group of friends and we were pushing back on the whole DTR thing. We had a group and we called ourselves btr. [00:01:13] Bachelors to the Rapture. [00:01:16] That's who we were. It was like we were going to. We're focused on. [00:01:21] And I was focused on Jesus until. [00:01:27] Until I looked up one day in my Computer Science 150 class and there was a fine blonde girl that walked down in front of the class. [00:01:41] I was ready to start the process of maybe eventually having a dtr. [00:01:47] And I did. [00:01:48] But there's something about a dtr. [00:01:51] It can be awkward and a little bit scary because you just don't know always. Like I could have these big feelings about her, but she could have me in her mind, firmly in the friend zone. That could be a possibility. [00:02:10] But in every healthy relationship, eventually a DTR is needed. [00:02:17] Is this thing casual or is it committed? [00:02:22] Is this just kind of an infatuation thing for right now or is this dedication? Am I in with everything now? I just want to say this. Every one of us needs to evaluate relationships. And if you are here today and you're sitting next to someone and you're thinking, I need to have a DTR with them, you're welcome. [00:02:45] Because you can just get in the car and just say, hey, you know that thing that he was saying about a DTR that was really interesting in that sermon, wasn't it? [00:02:57] We need friends. [00:03:00] We need to have a DTR with Jesus. [00:03:06] We do. [00:03:07] We need to have a heart to heart with Jesus. [00:03:11] And I'm just going to let you know, Jesus wants to have that kind of a heart to heart with you where you would actually just turn up your heart, your cards face up about your heart, Jesus. Is this just a casual Sunday thing or am I deeply committed to you? Have we moved past the casual thing where we actually communicate and are honest about our level of commitment to Jesus? [00:03:43] How would we define our relationship with him? How would we define our level of commitment? [00:03:50] And there's a simple way that the Bible would ask this question. And the question is simply this. [00:03:56] Am I a follower of Jesus? [00:04:01] Because being a follower of Jesus is what it means to be committed. And so that's the question I want us all to ask, honestly, am I a follower of Jesus? [00:04:15] Now, don't rush the question. [00:04:17] Now, I know if you've been around church a lot, you're probably just instinctively intuitively going to say, yes, of course I'm a follower of Jesus. [00:04:27] But let me tell you, let me be really clear what I am not asking. [00:04:31] I'm not asking if you go to church. I'm not even asking if you regularly obsessively attend church. [00:04:38] I'm not asking if you grew up in a Christian home and your grandpappy was a pastor. [00:04:45] I'm not asking, did you go to Christian school? [00:04:50] I'm not asking if you own or read the Bible. [00:04:55] I'm not asking if there was a time that you raised your hand after a service. I'm not asking if there was a time that you prayed a prayer or that you walked forward, maybe even at the end of a service or you checked a box on a card. That's not what I'm asking. [00:05:13] So let me ask the question again because I believe this is the most important question that we're ever going to ask in our life. Am I a follower of Jesus? [00:05:26] And here's why I ask. [00:05:29] Because I think that there's a lot of confusion out there in the church. Today. I was reading some statistics from Barna just from this last year. [00:05:38] He surveyed people that identified themselves as followers of Jesus Fellowship. 54%. Only 54% of those who identify themselves as followers of Jesus say that their faith is actually central to their life. [00:05:53] For half of the people, our faith is peripheral to our life. [00:05:58] Of those same people that were surveyed, 24% said that 24% that identify as a Christian say that they are non practicing. [00:06:08] Meaning I don't actually do anything with my life that would represent the fact that I am a follower of Jesus. [00:06:16] Here's where I think we land, friends. [00:06:20] There's lots of people in this world that have admiration for Jesus. [00:06:26] Maybe they hold him in high regard. There is a lot of respect and maybe there's even an emotional component to it. I have a fond affection for him and I believe a lot of the things about Jesus to be true. [00:06:41] They really like Jesus. [00:06:46] Another way to say it is they're a fan. [00:06:49] They are a big fan of Jesus. [00:06:53] But Jesus makes this clear to us in the scriptures that you can be a fan of him and not be a follower of him. [00:07:04] And that's what I think is one of the greatest challenges facing the church today. [00:07:10] There's a lot of us that we identify ourselves as followers of Jesus and we call ourselves Christians, but we're not following Jesus the way Jesus defines what it means to be a follower of him. [00:07:26] Now, I know, I know we want to get close enough to Jesus because we want to experience the benefits of that we think that Jesus potentially can bring to our life. [00:07:37] But we don't want to get so close to Jesus where he's actually interfering with our life. It's like, I'm pretty good Jesus. I've got my life. I want some benefits from you, but I don't want to give all of my life to you. [00:07:57] Many people live that way. [00:08:01] And our mission statement, friends around here, you see it on the screens if you pay attention. [00:08:06] Every week it says, together we lead people in becoming all in followers of Jesus. [00:08:16] So here's the deal. In this message and in this series that we're heading into for quite some time now, we want to talk about and answer the question, what. What is an all in follower of Jesus? [00:08:31] And you're going to get this throughout this series. [00:08:35] All in and follower. That's redundant. [00:08:39] That's what it means to be a follower of Jesus is that I go all in. [00:08:45] And when we look at the life and ministry of Jesus, you see that over and over again. [00:08:53] He was out of love for people, making it very, very clear and distinguishing. What does it mean to be a fan of Jesus and what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? [00:09:07] In his early ministry, we see in the Gospel of John there were just so many things that were happening. The crowds were gathering, just scores and scores, hundreds, thousands of people following Jesus around because there were an incredible amount of miracles. He was feeding people, he was healing people. [00:09:30] You could just see that the fans were growing. [00:09:34] And I imagine that if I was one of his disciples watching what was happening, we'd be thinking, jesus, this is great. [00:09:41] If we're going to change the world, we need lots of people. [00:09:47] But you know what? I don't think that was Jesus perspective. [00:09:53] Because when those crowds were gathering in John chapter six, Jesus in That moment he preaches a message where he raises the bar. [00:10:05] He brings great challenge to the people that are there in terms of what does it mean to follow him. [00:10:13] Lots of those people that were there, they wanted to be inspired by the life of Jesus, but they did not want Jesus to interfere with their life. [00:10:24] And that's what he was doing. He wanted to interfere. He wanted to change their life, change their thinking. [00:10:31] And so here's the result. [00:10:33] John chapter 6. On hearing that message, it says verse 60. On hearing it, many of his disciples said, this is a hard teaching. [00:10:45] Who can accept it? [00:10:48] And then in verse 66, it said, from this time, many, many of his disciples, disciples, people that had identified as people that wanted to sit under his teaching, many of those people turned back and no longer followed him. [00:11:08] Do you imagine that there was distress in the lives of the disciples? [00:11:13] Probably people are moving away, but not in the life of Jesus. He didn't have a problem with it. In fact, he went to the place where he raised the challenge Even with the 12, those that were the closest to him. He said this in verse 67, you do not want to leave two, do you? [00:11:33] Jesus asked the 12. [00:11:35] And then I love Simon's answer. [00:11:39] Simon Peter answered him, lord, to whom shall we go? [00:11:46] You, you have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and now know that you are the Holy One of. Of God. [00:11:59] See, Peter was just. It was clear to him Jesus wasn't one of many loves, one of many things that Peter and the 12 could give their lives to. He wasn't one of many. He was the one and only. [00:12:16] And that's why he said, where else would we go? This world. This world has nothing. Jesus that compares to, to you. Peter understood in that moment at least what it meant to be a follower of Jesus. [00:12:33] And it just strikes me that Jesus was willing for everyone to leave in order to make it clear, what does it mean? Because Jesus. What does it mean to be a follower? Because Jesus knew that it's not the crowds that are going to change the world. [00:12:53] It's the committed. [00:12:55] He knew that it's not the fans of Jesus that are going to change the world. It's his followers, those ones that are completely committed to him. And he makes it clear over and over. [00:13:07] There's another story that we're often familiar with. We call it the story of the Rich Young ruler. [00:13:14] We see this in multiple gospels, but in Mark, chapter 10, this is what Jesus says in the story of the Rich Young ruler. It says, as Jesus started on his way, a Man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. Good teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? [00:13:39] If you just look at that picture, doesn't that seem like it's a picture of someone that is absolutely committed? He runs to Jesus, he gets on his knees before him, gives him a term of endearment and respect. You are a good teacher. Just tell me, what must I do to inherit eternal life? [00:14:04] But Jesus knew there was something going on underneath the surface in his life that would keep him from being a fully committed follower of Jesus, that would keep him in that place of just being a fan. He loved money. [00:14:23] He loved money. [00:14:25] And you would think again if you were the disciples. And this guy came up to Jesus wanting to be on the team, like, this is who you choose. Someone who's rich. [00:14:35] Jesus, if he's on the team, he can help us finance the things that we're doing. [00:14:41] He's young, he's entrepreneurial. He's got energy. [00:14:45] That's what we need, the up and coming young people. [00:14:49] He's a ruler. He's got influence. He's got clout. This is who you want on your elder board, Jesus, pick him. [00:14:58] But Jesus says no. [00:15:01] Verse 21. It says that Jesus looked at him and he loved him. [00:15:09] Hear those words. [00:15:11] Jesus loved him. He wasn't angry at him. He loved him. And because he loved him, he wanted to make it really, really clear what it meant to follow him. He said, one thing you lack. He said, go and sell everything you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven. [00:15:35] Do that. [00:15:37] Then come follow me. [00:15:43] At this, the man's face fell and he went away sad because he had great wealth. [00:15:56] This is how clear Jesus needs to be. [00:15:59] When I read this, there was something that just jumped out at me this time more than it ever has. [00:16:05] Just the reality that Jesus said to this guy, it's just one thing, one thing you lack that will keep you from being a fully devoted follower of me. [00:16:20] I started to think, what would Jesus have said to me? [00:16:25] These 187 things that you lack. Bob, get those things figured out and then come follow me. It was just one thing, one thing. [00:16:38] But Jesus was willing to cut ties with him and let him go over one thing. [00:16:43] Because Jesus does not want to be one of many in our life or even one of two in our life. He. He needs to be the one and only and the rich young ruler. [00:16:59] He wanted salvation. [00:17:01] He wanted the benefits of following Jesus, but he wasn't willing to go all in. He Wasn't willing to go to that place of full surrender. [00:17:12] When I read that story, it just lets me know we can be a fan of Jesus without being a follower of Jesus. [00:17:23] And here's what I think is true of a fan, a fan, they like Jesus, but a follower, they're willing to give everything to become like Jesus. [00:17:40] And friends, that costs everything to hold our life up to him and say, jesus, my life is yours. You can do with my life whatever it is that you want. That's what Jesus wants to do in our life. He wants to bring that kind of transformation in our life. [00:17:58] I want to think. I want us to think a little bit today about this idea of experiencing the transformation of Jesus. [00:18:06] And I actually want to look at it through the lens of. Of an incredibly popular book right now. This is not a Christian book. This is a book by a man named James Clear, and it's a book called Atomic Habits. [00:18:20] And he begins to talk through and explain kind of the process that oftentimes we go to bring transformation to our life. And maybe you did this at the beginning of this year, like a New Year's resolution. Oftentimes we look at what he would call outcomes. [00:18:39] Another way to say outcomes is like, this is what we get. These are our goals. This is what it is that we are shooting for in life. [00:18:48] And in order to get to those goals, he talks about processes, meaning the habits and behaviors. What is it that we do in order to become what we want to become. And lastly, he talks about the idea of identity, meaning who is it that we will become? [00:19:14] What is our core identity? [00:19:18] And he would say, again, like I just described, that most of the time we think about goals, and this is my goal. This is what I'm going to do. These are the processes, and this is the result. This is who I am, who I will become. [00:19:33] But James Clear is so wise because he says, if you really want transformation in your life, you've got to flip that 180 degrees. We don't start with the outcome. We start with identity. [00:19:49] Who are we? Who are we at our very core? [00:19:54] And in light of who we are at our very core, that kind of a person, what are the things that they do? [00:20:02] And when I regularly, consistently do those things, what kind of a person then will I become? [00:20:10] That's how James Clear says that we make change. [00:20:14] And the reason I share about his book, because it's so popular, is that he has ripped off the Bible. [00:20:23] This is what the Bible talks about over and over again in terms of how our life Will change. [00:20:32] It always starts. Spiritual transformation always starts with identity. [00:20:39] And here's where James Clear and Jesus Christ are vastly different. [00:20:43] James Clear says, you need to decide the kind of person that you want to be. You declare your own identity. [00:20:53] But Jesus says, no, your identity is God declared. [00:21:00] I say who you are. I give you your identity. Our identity is something that we receive. [00:21:08] And when we understand our identity, what it is that God says is true about us that actually leads to our changes in behavior. What kind of things does God say are true of us? [00:21:22] He says things like this, you are a new creation. [00:21:26] The old has gone, the new has come. [00:21:30] He says right up front, transformation is to happen in your life. There's an old self that we put away, a new self that we put on. He says, you are God's workmanship. God made you. He crafted you just the way you are so that we can. We've been prepared in advance to do good works because of who we are. There's things that God has called us to do. [00:21:57] God says, you are no longer slaves to sin, and so we choose not to live in it anymore. [00:22:05] And Jesus says, if you want after me, you need to be a follower. [00:22:13] A follower. Not a fan, a follower. [00:22:17] That needs to be our core identity. [00:22:20] And so when we think about going from identity to processes, we don't use the word processes, we use terms. Our biblical terms would be like spiritual disciplines or spiritual practices. These are the behaviors that we let flow out of our identity that begin to change our life little by little. [00:22:41] See, we're not trying to earn an identity. We're actually just trying to embody the identity that God has already given us. [00:22:51] So let me give you some examples. If God says to us, as our identity, you are free from the bondage of sin, what does a person do then that is free from the bondage of sin? We don't live in it any longer. And when we see it in our life, we confess it. We bring it out into the open with God and with other people, and we repent of it. We turn from it. Those are the processes, the spiritual practices that we grab ahold of. If we believe that at our very core, we are a child of. Of God, we belong to him. And the way Jesus says it in John 10 is that we are his sheep. And he says, my sheep, they hear my voice and they follow me. [00:23:37] If that's true, that means that I need to spend my life learning. I learn how to listen for the voice of God so I can follow him. I create space in my life. [00:23:50] To be able to drown out the noise of this world so that I can hear what it is that he has to say to me, so I can follow him, so I can hear and obey his words. [00:24:02] If I truly believe that God is my provider, I trust him for my provision. [00:24:09] I am a steward of everything that he's given me. My time, my treasure, my talents, all of those things I invest on his behalf. I use his resources the way that he is asking me to use, because I trust Him. [00:24:25] And if God says that when we come into a relationship with him, we become part of the body of Christ. [00:24:32] We are connected together as a community of people. That means that I look for ways to engage with people in and around the church so that I can love and to serve and be friends and to help other people grow. That's the kinds of things that we do when we understand who we are. [00:24:54] We learn to live into our identity. [00:24:59] And when we start to do that, we develop those processes, those spiritual disciplines, those spiritual practices. [00:25:06] Ultimately, we end up with the outcomes. [00:25:11] What are the outcomes? [00:25:13] In the Bible, we just simply call that fruit. [00:25:16] It's the fruit of our life. [00:25:19] Jesus doesn't tell us to start with the fruit. [00:25:23] When we think about, like John 15, Jesus didn't say, start with the fruit and produce fruit. He says, abide in me, come close to me, be connected to me, listen to me. [00:25:37] The result then will be that we will begin to live the kind of life that he lived, and we will do the kinds of things that we do, and we will produce fruit in our life. [00:25:48] His invitation is always, follow me, Follow me. You are a follower of me. I want to look really quick. I was trying to. I was just thinking about how often this shows up, these principles show, show up in the writings of Paul, this idea, that identity, process, outcomes. [00:26:10] I want us to read Ephesians 4. There were so many examples, but I thought, I'm just gonna choose one to show you. Ephesians 4, 1 3. This is what Paul says. He says, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. [00:26:26] Be completely humble and gentle. Be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. [00:26:37] What does Paul talk about here? [00:26:40] He talks about a calling, a calling, an identity. And he makes it really clear. This calling, this identity, you received it. [00:26:51] It's not something that you created, something that you worked for. It was something that was given to, to you. And then he's saying, in light of that, in light of what God has called you to be. So this is our. This is our identity. [00:27:07] In light of that, what do we do? [00:27:10] We live a life worthy. [00:27:14] This is the process piece. [00:27:16] What is it that I do in light of who I am? What do I do? [00:27:21] I live a life that is worthy of what Jesus has done for me. And lastly, you see all of these character qualities. [00:27:29] These are the outcomes. [00:27:31] This is the life of Christ. This is the character of Christ that is born in us. [00:27:36] When we know who we are, we live in light of who we are. We produce the fruit of Jesus in our life. [00:27:45] That is how transformation happens. [00:27:48] That is how we become like Jesus. [00:27:53] And that's why I asked the question that I asked at the very beginning that you would ask yourself, am I a follower of Jesus? [00:28:02] Is that my core identity? [00:28:05] Because if it's not our core identity, we're not going to live like that's our core identity. [00:28:12] We'll be fans. [00:28:14] We'll be people that like Jesus, but we won't be the kinds of followers that are willing to do whatever it takes to become like Jesus. [00:28:27] Here's where it gets personal. [00:28:30] Are you, Are each of us, me included? Are we ready for a DTR with Jesus? [00:28:39] He wants to have one with you. He wants to know what is your level of commitment to him. [00:28:47] We know his level of commitment to us. [00:28:50] We see that on the cross he was willing to do whatever it takes to create the way for us to have a relationship with him. But what is our level of commitment to Him? Are we ready to have a dtr? [00:29:03] And here's what I need to say. As someone who loves you and as your pastor, you need to know that you will have a DTR with Jesus if you choose not to do it now, you will one day and you will learn that relationships matter to Jesus. [00:29:23] When I read this scripture, I think this is the ultimate dtr. [00:29:27] At the very end of Jesus Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew chapter seven, he talks about this one day, this one day, when everyone, everyone one day will stand before Jesus and give an account of our relationship to him. [00:29:44] And in Matthew chapter seven, this is what he says, and this is sobering. [00:29:48] He says, not every, oh, not everyone who says to me, lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. [00:30:09] Many will say to me on that day, lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, in your name drive out demons, and in your name perform many miracles? [00:30:20] Jesus says, then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you away from me, you evildoers. [00:30:30] Every time I read this, this is sobering, and a couple of things always grab my attention. [00:30:41] Many, many. [00:30:45] There's going to be a lot of people that are thinking that they're standing confidently before Jesus because of things that, that they've done. [00:30:55] It's not just one or two that slip through the cracks. It says that there are many. [00:31:01] And then Jesus says this to them plainly, I never knew you. [00:31:11] I never knew you. [00:31:13] Now, that word there, that Matthew's using, that word. No, it's not an intellectual. No. [00:31:22] Like, of course Jesus knows them. He made them. [00:31:26] He knows everything about them. He knows them better than they know themselves. [00:31:31] But what Jesus is saying is, I didn't have a relationship with you. [00:31:36] To be known is to mean I am close with you, I am intimate with you. We were together in this life. [00:31:44] And for many people, Jesus is going to say, I never knew you. [00:31:48] Because so many people are thinking this outward appearance, this outward thought of my relationship with Jesus didn't match what was actually happening between Jesus and ourselves. [00:32:00] And now I need to say this, and I want this to be incredibly clear as well. [00:32:07] My goal in sharing this and my goal is in this message and in this series, it is not. It is not to try to create fear and doubt in your life about where you're at with Jesus. It's not. [00:32:25] Jesus never leveraged fear. [00:32:29] He didn't want us to be fearful, but he wanted to be clear. [00:32:33] He didn't want us to be confused about what it meant to be a follower of him. And he does that out of love, just like he did with the rich young ruler. [00:32:42] It was like he became a fork in the road, but it tells us so clearly. He looked at him and he loved him and said, you've got to take the road towards me and not your own road in this series. My hope, again, is that it wouldn't create fear and doubt, but it would actually come to a place where it affirms and confirms your faith that you would know in your heart of hearts where it is that you stand with Jesus, that you would actually take the time to evaluate, where am I with him? Is this something that has just over time, become incredibly casual in my life? [00:33:25] Or am I deeply committed to him? [00:33:29] Is Jesus one of many things in my life that are important to me? Or is Jesus my one and only? Where does he stand? [00:33:39] Because if we ask the question now, it gives us a chance to get on a different path. [00:33:46] There's an opportunity for us to say, you know, this has gotten way too casual. Jesus, I want to be committed to you. And we can repent of that and we can turn back to our first love. [00:33:57] And we need to do that over and over. It's easy to get distracted, isn't it? [00:34:03] I was just thinking this week, I was having a conversation with my wife, and there was all this anxiety and stress and things. I was just so frustrated about so many things. And she asked me the most penetrating question. [00:34:16] She was like, where is Jesus in this with you? [00:34:22] And I've got to be honest, as soon as she asked the question, I felt completely naked because the question was just so exposing. [00:34:33] It was like, you know, I don't know. I'm trying to do this on my own. I'm trying to grind this out without him. And it was just that great opportunity to turn back, to repent, and to say, jesus, you're my first love. I don't want to do ministry for you, Jesus. I want to do ministry with you. And it changed things. [00:34:56] We all need to have those redirections. And, friends, that's what a DTR with Jesus can do. [00:35:06] Jesus lets us know how he feels. [00:35:11] He showed us on the cross. [00:35:13] He's willing to give everything. [00:35:17] You don't have to wonder, is he committed to you? [00:35:22] We need to ask the question, am I committed to Him? [00:35:27] Is he one of many things in my life, or is he my one and only? [00:35:35] When we're hurting in this life, where do we go for comfort? [00:35:41] Where do we run to? [00:35:42] Is it Him? [00:35:45] What are the things that you're excited about in this life? What are the things that you daydream about when you think about your future? [00:35:52] Is Jesus a part of that picture? Or is it just the stuff of this world? [00:35:57] When your heart breaks for the things that are happening around you, is it because those are the things that break the heart of Jesus? Because you're so connected to him that your heart breaks when his does? [00:36:08] What are the things that you're willing to sacrifice your money and your time for in this world? Are they the things that are on the heart of Jesus? Are they the things that matter to him? [00:36:21] I'm just going to ask the same question over and over throughout the series. Are we going to be a fan? [00:36:26] Are we going to be a follower? [00:36:29] Because a fan, they like Jesus, but a follower, they're willing to drop everything, hold their life up to him, and say, jesus, I want to become like you. [00:36:45] I don't want to just tweak my life. [00:36:48] I want my life to be surrendered to you. [00:36:51] And Jesus will tell us that's where we find life, not in being a fan, but in being a follower. [00:36:59] Which one are you? [00:37:01] Let's pray. [00:37:08] Jesus, as humbling as it is, I am so grateful that you are willing to be so clear that we wouldn't be confused about what it means to follow you. [00:37:24] Jesus, I pray that through the power of your Holy Spirit that you would change our hearts, that you would change our lives over the context of this series, that we would actually evaluate our life, not the way the world describes what it means to be a follower and not even how some churches describe what it means to be a follower of you. But Jesus, we would let you define what it means to be your follower. [00:37:51] Jesus, we don't want to just like you, we want to become like you. [00:38:00] Jesus, you're not one of many, you are the one and only. [00:38:06] And like Peter said, where else would we go? Jesus, you have the words of eternal life. [00:38:13] And Jesus, it's in your powerful, powerful, powerful name that we pray. And all God's people said amen.
